Telnet is a way of connecting to a server and running commands on that server. If you are familiar with a DOS box under windows then a telnet session will be failry familiar. In essence it is like opening a DOS box to the remote server. However, the commands are different as you will be connecting to a Linux server, not a Windows server.

The easiest way of opening a telnet session is to type "telnet www.domain.com" where "domain.com" is replaced with your own domain name. This command can either be entered at a command prompt (dos box or start!run under windows, or in a terminal window under Linux/Unix). Once connected you will be asked for your username and password. These are the same as for your email.

Once connected you have a number of commands available. The most useful are:

Linux Command  Dos Equivalent  Description
cd  cd  Change Directory
ls  dir  get a directory listing of the current directory
